Gelsenkirchen is famous for its football club “Schalke 04”, which is the second most popular football club in Germany. The city’s history dates back to the times of the ancient Romans, and a number of its districts are mentioned in medieval chronicles. By buying an apartment in Gelsenkirchen, you will be living near two medieval castles – Schloss Horst and Schloss Berge, which are city landmarks.
Gelsenkirchen is also known for its glass and mirror manufacturing plants, as well as its mining and metallurgical industry. On the site of one of the old coal mines, Nordstern, now lies one of the city’s most famous parks — Nordsternpark (North Star Park). In addition to interesting structures based on the former mine, the park also features an amphitheater built for the German Federal Garden Show in 1997 and many original sculptures.
